Another CP derailment - Medicine Hat, AB

Brothers and Sisters,

Once again there has been a serious train accident at CPrail. On the evening of February 3, 2010, an eastbound train travelling on #2 track in Medicine Hat yard derailed and sent cars skidding across to the #1 track (main line) striking the unit of a westbound in front of the station. The engine was knocked off the track and its fuel tank was ripped open causing a diesel spill. Clean up crews have responded.

There were 7 cars, as well as the westbound's unit involved and thank God no one was hurt or killed. As you can see in the above picture, the runaway cars smashed headlong into the standing unit and pushed it right off the track. Observers believe that if the westbound had not been sitting on the mainline, the 7 cars would have had a clear path and possibly demolished the Medicine Hat Station. At this time, the cause of the derailment has not been released.

One more reason to remember to work safe out there and keep your eyes open to all dangers and defects.  We know the condition of the infrastructure, especially with manpower and material shortages and we must constantly be aware of all possibilities.

Stay safe, stay strong, stay united.
