Local Union 362 (Alberta) is proud to announce they successfully organized new members from Waste Services Inc. (W.S.I.).

These workers do commercial and residential garbage and recycle pickup in the City of Edmonton, Alberta. The 160 employees, including drivers, swampers, MERF staff (recycling plant), mechanics, welders and shop personal, were members of C.A.W. Local Union 4050.

The workers had become very disgruntled with C.A.W. and voiced numerous concerns, i.e. very little presence of their local union representative; lack of reaction & explanation to their grievances, which left the bulk of the work on the shoulders of the shop steward; lack of structure at union meetings, resulting in lack of progress. They therefore had lost confidence in the C.A.W.

After the W.S.I. employees met with Teamsters organizers and Local Union 362 representatives, it was clear that the Teamsters’ structure, experience and expertise was what they were looking for, and so they decided to join Local Union 362.

By building a solid inside committee and having a constant presence at the gas pumps, where the employees fueled their trucks, our campaign was successful. As Teamsters we know we can provide better services to the employees at W.S.I. We are proud that this group of employees is now part of us and we will work on building unity and dealing with their concerns.

An organizing campaign of this size involved all the staff at Local Union 362. It was a team effort by all. Thanks to all who helped make this initiative a success.

The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
