Season's greetings from Robert Bouvier, president of Teamsters Canada

2009 is already drawing to an end, and your union was once again able to achieve success despite difficult circumstances.
In addition to dozens of organizing campaigns, which enabled us to increase our membership across the country, our team continues to organize workers at FedEx and Challenger Motorfreight, among others. These two campaigns will continue in 2010, and we are hopeful that we will be able to convince these workers to join the country's most powerful union.
The Via Rail lockout, followed by the CN strike, have made the public aware of the need for all employers to invest reasonably in workers' safety and training. These are non-negotiable working conditions since it is the health and safety of workers—and all Canadians—that hangs in the balance!
Although the global financial crisis has harmed the Canadian economy, we have been vigilant in preventing your employers from using this as a pretext to slash your working conditions. In this respect, I would like to recognize the Canadian union officers and business agents who have been able, in the majority of cases, to protect—and in some cases even improve—the working conditions of tens of thousands of people in Canada.
In conclusion, I would like to wish you and your family health, happiness, and prosperity in 2010.
The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
